Near contemporary quarter calf with marbled paper covered boards, rubbed with wear to corners and head and foot of spine. Scarce. A nice copy with extra engraved contemporary oval portraits mounted on blank leaves bound in. The portraits are of Charles Edward Stuart, the Earl of Cromertie, Lord Balmerino, Lord Lovat, Miss Macdonald, the Earl of Kilmarnock and Miss Cameron. An attractive engraved armorial bookplate, by C.W. Sherborne, of Robert Gordon Gordon-Gilmour of Liberton & Craigmillar. Attributed to Ralph Griffiths (1720-1803), a fictional account of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Griffiths, a publisher, founded the Monthly Review in 1749.
